There are a handful of names synonymous with drag racing. There’s Garlits, Muldowney, Force, Glidden, Kalitta, and there is Coughlin.
Jeg Coughlin Jr., 46, has cemented his name in the NHRA drag racing annuls with a list of mind-boggling statistics.
The five-time Pro Stock world champion (2000, 2002, 2007-08, 2013) is looking to stack on his prodigious pile of stats in 2017 and beyond as he goes on a straight-line quest for his sixth class championship with a familiar bowtie logo on the front of his racer, the JEGS.com/Elite Motorsports Chevrolet Camaro.
The youngest son of motorsports and business legend Jeg Coughlin Sr., "Jeggie" already is the ninth winningest professional driver in the 65-year existence of NHRA competition, and he looks to join even more elite company in 2017 by becoming one of only nine drivers with 600 elimination round wins.
Coupled with his 1992 Super Gas world championship, his astonishing career behind the wheel includes six world titles. It also includes 76 national event victories, 20 No. 1 qualifying positions (Pro Stock), and a trophy on the mantle for being named the 1998 NHRA rookie of the year. Of his 76 trips to the winner’s circle, 58 are in Pro Stock, arguably NHRA’s most competitive pro class, which makes him fourth all time in the category.
In 1997 Coughlin became the first and still only NHRA driver to win in four different classes in the same season with victories in Pro Stock, Super Stock, Super Gas, and Comp.
He's also the first and only driver to race to victories in seven classes, garnering national event Wallys in Pro Stock, Comp, Super Stock, Stock, Super Comp, Super Gas, and Top Dragster.
Coughlin’s passion for the sport he loves was never more evident than when he scored an extraordinary win in the K&N Spring Fling 5-Day event at Bristol Dragway in 2015 and then doubled up at the JEGS NHRA Northern SPORTSnationals, reminding everyone of his already legendary bracket-racing prowess.
He’s also the only pro driver to earn an event win from every qualifying position, No. 1 to No. 16.
The Coughlin family is not only feared by their opponents on the track, they are also quite savvy in the board room. Jeg and his three brothers John, Troy and Mike own and operate the highly successful family business, JEGS. In the nearly three decades since purchasing the company from their father, the Coughlin brothers have elevated JEGS to a worldwide leader in direct-to-consumer performance products, shipping more than a million orders a year to nearly 100 countries with a near-perfect customer satisfaction rating. "Customer Care is #1" and the family commits to provide the most "Extensive Selection" with "Impeccable Value," all backed with a "Lifetime of Support."
On a personal level, Coughlin has been invigorated away from the track and office by the success of his son, Jeg III, a proud member of the elite golf team at The Ohio State University, while studying Economics and Management. Jeg III won the Ohio High School Athletic Association Division III Golf Championship in his junior year of high school and has been sky-rocketing upwards ever since, oftentimes with his famous father cheering him on from the ropes.
Coughlin and his drag racing wife Samantha also stay busy chasing 2-year-old Carly around their Delaware, Ohio, home and racetrack, watching another chapter of the family’s unmatched legacy unfold before their eyes. Samantha enjoys powering a JEGS Super Comp dragster throughout the year and has found success winning at the NHRA National event level.
