Team JEGS/Prerace Notes
NHRA Division 3 Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series
Gateway Motorsports Park, Madison, Ill. (Oct. 20-22)
Mike Coughlin will be racing his JEGS.com Top Dragster in this weekend’s All-American Hot Rod Showdown, the North Central Division season finale in St. Louis. Mike will be joined by his niece, third-generation racer Paige Coughlin, who will be making her fourth career start in Super Comp behind the wheel of her JEGS.com dragster.
Mike will be racing the same Top Dragster he drove to a win earlier this season in his 2017 debut at the Circle K Winternationals in Pomona. In that event, Mike ran as quick as 6.05 seconds and defeated Andy Spiegel in the final round.
Mike is currently ranked third nationally and in the North Central Division Top Dragster class and remains in contention for both championships. He is eligible to earn points at two more events this season.
In addition to his national event win in Pomona, Mike also won the North Central Division Lucas Oil Series event in Indianapolis.
A few weeks ago at the AAA Insurance NHRA Midwest Nationals at Gateway Motorsports Park, Mike was a runner-up in the Top Dragster class to Danny Nelson.
Mike’s dragster is equipped with a ProCharger centrifugal supercharger and is capable of running in the five-second zone at more than 230 mph. Mike’s crew consists of Greg Cody and Tony Collier.
Last year, Mike returned to the Top Dragster class after a successful run in Top Sportsman that included a pair of Division 3 championships.
During his career, Mike has won 12 divisional events in Super Comp, Top Sportsman, and Top Dragster. His first win came at Beech Bend Raceway Park in Bowling Green, Ky., in 1989.
Paige is the 17-year-old daughter of two-time NHRA Pro Mod series champ Troy Coughlin. Her older brother is Troy Coughlin Jr., a past Division 3 champ in Super Gas. A former NHRA Jr. Drag Racing League racer, Paige earned her NHRA competition license for the Super Comp class earlier this season.
In her Super Comp debut at the Buckeye Fuel Wars at her home track, National Trail Raceway, Paige reached the third round of eliminations. She was also honored with the Best Appearing Car award for her McIlvain Race Cars-built JEGS.com dragster.
In three events this season, Paige has managed to win at least one round of competition in the highly-competitive Super Comp category.
The Coughlin’s have won Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series events in nine different classes, Top Fuel, Pro Comp, Super Eliminator, Comp, Super Stock, Super Comp, Super Gas, Top Dragster and Top Sportsman.
All told, the Coughlin family has won 57 Lucas Oil Series races in 83 final-round appearances.
Jeg Coughlin Sr., Jeg Coughlin Jr., and John Coughlin have each won four North Central Division season championships while Mike Coughlin has two and Troy Jr. has one for a total of 15.
The Coughlin’s have won Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series events at 20 different tracks across North America including races in six of NHRA’s seven geographic divisions. They have not won in Division 6, the Pacific Northwest.
Family patriarch Jeg Coughlin Sr. won his first Lucas Oil Series event when he claimed the Super Eliminator title at Windsor Dragway in Windsor, Ontario in 1969.
